<itunes:summary>Imagine gliding along in a canoe, on a lake as smooth as glass,
within sight of majestic pines and a true blue dream of sky
overhead….see yourself laughing and talking with friends
gathered around a crackling campfire….can you picture it? If
you were in church one summer Sunday you heard me describe
the annual Algonquin canoe trip that way, trying to recruit
another adult leader. Well, even after that enticing offer, none
of you bit, so the trip had to be limited to four young men and
their leader Brendan Pham.
As it turned out, this trip—which the church has sponsored for
some 17 years without mishap—had a terrifying conclusion...</itunes:summary>

<title>So We Really Don’t Have to Wash Our Hands Before We Eat</title>

<itunes:subtitle>03 September 2006, based on Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23</itunes:subtitle>

<itunes:summary>Let’s start this right off by saying to the children that are in the
congregation that if you are not going to listen to anything else in the sermon
this morning, contrary to what you just thought you heard in the Scripture
passage and might infer by my sermon title, Your mother is right, you still
must wash your hands before you eat...</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Five years ago, I celebrated my 20th anniversary of my ordination by writing

people’s nurturing guidance, education, care and love, and I wanted to write

<title>What's Love Got to Do with It?</title>

<itunes:author>Rev. Louise Westfall</itunes:author>

<itunes:subtitle>13 August 2006, based on I Corinthians 13</itunes:subtitle>

<itunes:summary>My son learned very quickly to answer the inevitable Sunday
dinner question, “So what was the church school lesson about
today?” with one of two answers: “God” or “love.” What his
response lacked in specificity was more than made up for in
Big Picture understanding. After all, what is more important
than God, or more essential to Christian faith than love? After
a summer of sermon requests about fundamentalism, politics
from the pulpit, immigration, homosexuality, I was cheered by
the possibility of a subject about which everyone agrees.
“Love” seemed like a safe bet. Whew!</itunes:summary>

<title>Church Growth and Change - Ruin or Renewal?</title>

<itunes:author>Rev. Dick Clewell</itunes:author>

<itunes:subtitle>06 August 2006, based on 2 Corinthians 5:17-21</itunes:subtitle>

<itunes:summary>In our continuing summer series, “You Asked for It,” we turn to a question raised
which asks, “How can we grow our church at the same time keeping our theological
integrity and distinctive approach?” Does growth mean making change? If we take
“diversity,” “reaching out,” “welcoming and affirming” seriously, will we drive away
people in our already diminished congregation?</itunes:summary>

<title>Confessions of a Recovering Fundamentalist</title>

<itunes:author>Rev. Dick Clewell</itunes:author>

<itunes:subtitle>30 July 2006, based on 1 Peter 3:8-17</itunes:subtitle>

<itunes:summary>In the course of this “You Asked for It” summer series, the question was asked,
“How do you talk to a fundamentalist, to a born-again Christian?” This question would
appear to imply that such a person is a different breed of cat from other human beings.
Are they so heavenly minded, they’re no earthly good? In our day of polarization in
politics and religion we too often adopt the stance that someone (or I) am either right or
wrong. Perhaps this is why we are hesitant to engage others whose faith is expressed in
different ways from ours. Are we afraid we will be judged or will fail to have the
correct response or answer?</itunes:summary>
